Rueben’s Reflections – October 2019

October 16, 2019

On Thursday, the 3rd of this month, I had the opportunity to be a part of a 3-day Conference for young people from year 7 to year 12, called EncounterFest. This year’s theme was: Movers, Makers, Shakers.

Movers – God is moving young people towards Himself.

Makers – God is making His young people’s future for life.

Shakers – God is shaking them to know Christ.

The thing that stood out to me the most was the worship setting. Four hundred young people singing about Him, to Him, and for Him, is really an amazing thing to hear. I remember when I was in year 7, it was my first time going to this 3-day conference, and my first impression was ‘WOW!’ Just listening to and being a part of a group of a couple of hundred people worshiping and praising was incredible. Since that time four years ago, I haven’t had that feeling again, until this year’s EncounterFest. The way young people worship is fascinating.

Worshiping God is a lifestyle. I’ve come to realise that you don’t need a band to play music in order to worship. And, God doesn’t only do miracles while you worship. He can do miracles while you are walking to school, sitting in class, watching TV, walking the dog (or the cat 😜), or working out in the gym. God can do miracles at any time, not only when you are in an environment of worship like EncounterFest.

In the new Hillsong Album ‘Awake’, there is a song by Brooke Ligertwood called ‘Awake My Soul’. Some of the lyrics are: “Awake my soul and sing, sing His praise aloud”. This song stands out to me because it is worshiping God from our soul, from the very depths of our being. ‘Awake my soul and sing His praise.’ It’s like giving all our praise and worship to Him, with everything that we are, and He listens and awakes within us to do it all over again, and again and again. “Oh wake up, you slumbering, it’s time to worship Him”.

During the day, when I have time, I sing to myself the lyrics that I remember hearing from whatever worship song my Mum has playing in her car on the drive to school. It really helps me get through my day if I am feeling down. It also helps me refocus on the things that are important right now. That’s why I love this particular song. “Awake my soul and sing, sing His praise aloud”.

Worship is a lifestyle, and it can help you through your everyday, but ultimately, Worship is about bringing glory and honour and praise to our God. Encounter Him in your everyday, Worship Him and bring Him praise and watch and see His work in your life. We can truly be Movers, Makers and Shakers for Him!
